Qualifying for NHS entitlement

Residents living in the UK are entitled to free NHS (National Health Service) support on certain services and products. The NHS supply vouchers to your local opticians that can be used in exchange for free eye testsglasses and contact lenses. To see if you are entitled to free NHS help, see below.

You are entitled to an NHS voucher if you are:

  • under 16
  • a full time student aged 16, 17 or 18 and attending school, college or university

You are also entitled to free NHS support if you:

  • or your partner receives income support
  • or your partner receives income-based job seekers allowance
  • or your partner receives income-related employment and support allowance
  • or your partner receives pension credit guarantee credit
  • or your partner receives tax credit and you or both are named on a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  • are named on a valid HC2 and HC3 certificate
  • are a prisoner on leave from the prison
  • have been prescribed complex lenses under the NHS optical voucher scheme

FREE glasses and contact lenses

Roots Opticians supply glasses completely FREE to people who qualify for help through an NHS voucher as long as the frame is up to the value of £65. Roots Opticians will supply standard single vision or bifocals at no extra cost. Any upgrade to your frame, spectacle lenses or coatings and you can simply pay the difference. Alternatively you can use your NHS voucher to pay for your initial supply of contact lenses.

 

FREE eye-test

You are entitled to a FREE eye test if:

  • you are aged 60 or over
  • you are under 19 years of age and in full time education
  • you are registered blind or partially sighted
  • you have a complex prescription (our optician will advise)
  • you are Diabetic
  • you have Glaucoma
  • you are aged 40 or over and a member of your immediate family suffers from glaucoma
  • you or your partner receive either job seekers allowance, income support, guaranteed pension credit or tax credits (meeting qualifying conditions)
  • You have a HC2 form

An NHS eye test is available every two years providing you continue to qualify. You may require a free eye-test sooner if you experience vision problems or your optician requests an earlier eye test. New spectacles can be issued every two years or sooner if they need replacing due to fair wear and tear. Roots Opticians will take care of all the paperwork required, leaving you free to concentrate on choosing your glasses. All you need to do is make an appointment and bring evidence of your NHS entitlement with you on the day. Do not worry if you cannot bring the necessary entitlement with you, we will still be able to proceed with your eye examination. Your local health authority may check your eligibility in due course.
